Responsibility for the Supply

Texas is running out of water faster than it is finding more, and that will be true for the rest of our working lives. The Hill Country is growing onto land that has no municipal line and never will, drawing from wells in limestone that refills slowly and unevenly, in a climate that swings between years of drought and afternoons of flood. The rain still comes. We are simply not set up to keep it.

This is usually treated as a problem for utilities and legislatures, solved at the scale of reservoirs and pipelines, over decades, with public money. Some of it is. But there is another supply sitting unbuilt above nearly every house in the county: the roof. A 3,000 square foot roof sheds roughly 60,000 gallons in an average Hill Country year. Almost all of it is thrown away, into a ditch, into a creek, gone in an hour, by properties that will spend the next dry summer buying hauled water or deepening a well.

We think the ethics are plain. A property that supplies itself is a property no longer drawing on a shared aquifer or a strained system. That is not a gesture. It is subtraction from demand, and it is one of the few things an owner can do, on their own land, with their own money, that measurably improves the situation for everyone downgradient. Scarcity is not solved at the property level. But it is meaningfully answered there, one roof at a time, faster than any reservoir can be permitted.

What that asks of us is durability. A rainwater system is a roof, a run of conveyance, a filter, a pump, and someone who understands all of it. Neglect one part and the whole thing stops being a water supply and becomes a tank in the side yard. A system built well and maintained honestly produces for decades, which is the entire point. Anything less and we have sold a symbol rather than a supply.

So we build to last, and we come back. Coming back is the harder half.
