Permitting note
As of July 2026, the City of Dripping Springs no longer requires a plumbing permit for standalone rainwater systems used only for outdoor landscape irrigation and kept fully separate from indoor plumbing and any public water supply. Systems plumbed into the house still do, and permits for grading, drainage, electrical, or floodplain can still apply either way.

Local conditions
Dripping Springs sits over the Trinity Aquifer, and outside the utility service areas most acreage here has no water line to connect to. Wells into the Trinity can be drilled, but yields vary property to property and static levels drop through a dry summer, so a well that was adequate in a wet year can come up short in a drought. That combination — no line, uneven groundwater, and a roof catching about 34 inches a year — is why so many homes here were built on collected rainwater from the start rather than as a backup. It also means a system going down is a house-out-of-water problem, not an inconvenience.
